About Penalty Kick Online

Penalty Kick Online is a penalty shootout game from the studio Code This Lab, whose name appears in the game's credits. Two sides take turns: one shoots, the other keeps goal, and then the roles swap. What sets it apart from most shootout games is a maths twist: answering arithmetic questions quickly earns you bonus shots.

You start by picking a national team. The list holds thirty-two countries, among them Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, England, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Senegal and Australia. Your player also gets a random name, like "Fiery Zombie", which you can reroll on the main menu.

How to play

• Shooting: swipe across the ball to kick it, or drag with the mouse on a computer. The way you swipe decides where the shot goes.
• Keeping: when you are in goal, tap the screen to let the opponent take the kick, then see whether your keeper keeps it out.
• Bonus shots: a maths question appears with a countdown. Answer correctly before time is up for an extra shot. Questions use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and the time allowed shrinks as you go.

Modes

The main menu has two buttons: player against computer, and player against player. Against the computer you work through a run of matches, and beating the computer in the tenth one earns the World Champion trophy. Saved progress can be wiped if you want to redo the matches from the start.

The two-player mode is online. You can take a random opponent, join a match from a list, or create your own room with a name and an optional password; a room without a password is public. In online matches each move has a time limit, and if you run out the computer takes a poor shot for you. Rematches can be requested at the end.

Progress and trophies

Every match earns XP toward your level. Trophies cover goals scored (Bronze, Silver and Golden Boot), saves (Bronze, Silver and Golden Glove), correct maths answers (Mathkicker, Math of the Match, Math Legend), a Hat Trick for scoring three in a row, and streaks such as Goal Machine. A stats screen splits your record into overall, kicker, keeper and maths accuracy, with hot-zone maps that show which parts of the goal you score in and save in most often.

Tips

• Check your kicker hot zones in the stats screen, then aim more often at the corners where your shots already succeed.
• Answer the maths questions quickly but carefully: a wrong answer costs you the bonus shot.
• In online games, keep an eye on the move timer so the computer never has to shoot for you.
