The game on this page is Donkey Kong Returns, a Flash remake of Nintendo's original Donkey Kong arcade game, now running in the browser through the Ruffle Flash player on CrazyGames. You control Jumpman, the hero later known as Mario, and climb ladders and girders to reach Pauline, who is being held at the top by the giant ape Donkey Kong. He throws barrels down the slopes at you, and fireballs roam the platforms, so every climb is a matter of timing your moves between them.

Controls

• Left and right arrow keys: walk along a girder.
• Up and down arrow keys: climb up or down a ladder.
• Space bar: jump.

The game is played with a keyboard; CrazyGames lists keyboard controls only, and since it is a converted Flash file it is best played on a computer.

What you face

The game file shows the familiar arcade set pieces. There are rolling barrels, a blue barrel, an oil drum that turns barrels into fire, falling pies, girder elevators and a stage of rivets, each with its own hazards. A "How High" screen appears between stages, a bonus timer runs during each stage, and reaching certain point totals awards an extra life.

Points come from jumping over barrels and fireballs and from smashing things. Pick up one of the hammers and Jumpman swings it automatically for a short time, breaking barrels, pies and fireballs that run into it. The game also keeps your own statistics, including how many barrels you jumped, how many enemies you hammered and how many times you died, and it remembers your high score.

Medals

This remake was made for Newgrounds and still carries its list of medals, unlocked for things you do in play. Names in the file include Jumpman, Super Jumpman, Omega Jumpman, Daredevil, Hammer Time, Hammer Head, Pie in the Face, Balls of Fire, Great Balls of Fire, Donkey Konga, Kill Screen and one named after the documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.

Tips

• Watch the barrels as they reach the end of each girder. Some roll down the ladders, so standing at the foot of a ladder is never fully safe.
• A hammer only lasts a short time, so grab it when barrels are heading your way rather than on an empty girder.
• Jumping over hazards scores points, so on an easy stretch a well-timed jump is worth more than simply stepping out of the way.
