Text Twist is an anagram word game. Each round hands you a rack of lettered balls, and the job is to rearrange them into as many real English words as you can find. The version embedded here is the Text Twist 2 build distributed by Famobi, and its main menu sums up the goal in one line: rearrange letters to make as many words as you can.
The goal of each round
Every word you enter must be at least three letters long. The rule that decides whether you move on is simple: you need at least one word that uses every letter on the rack. Find one and the game tells you that you qualify for the next round. If a round ends without one, you get a "Sorry!" panel reminding you that a word using every letter is required. Finding every hidden word in a round earns bonus points on top of the normal score.
In this web build the racks are drawn from a six-letter word list, so the long word you are hunting for has six letters. The code also contains a seven-letter list and a difficulty switch for six-letter, mixed and seven-letter play, but both belong to the downloadable deluxe edition and are switched off on the web.
Controls
With a mouse, click the balls in the order you want to spell the word, then press the ENTER button. The other buttons on the board do the following:
- TWIST shuffles the remaining letters into a new order.
- LAST brings back the word you entered just before.
- CLEAR sends every chosen letter back to the rack.
You can also type. Pressing a letter on your keyboard pulls a matching ball into the answer row. The spacebar twists the letters, Enter submits the word (or repeats the last word if the row is empty), Backspace removes the last letter, and Tab clears the whole row. These shortcuts are listed on the third page of the in-game How to Play screen.
Timed and untimed play
The main menu has two buttons, TIMED and UNTIMED. Timed play shows a clock next to your score and the round number; untimed play removes the clock so you can work through the rack at your own pace. Both modes use the same rule for advancing. When you type something that is not in the dictionary, the game answers with a short "Sorry, not a valid word!" message.
Tips that follow from the rules
- Look for the full-length word first. It is the only thing that decides whether you reach the next round, so it deserves more attention than a pile of three-letter words.
- When nothing comes to mind, press the spacebar a few times. Seeing the same letters in a different order is exactly what the TWIST button is there for, and the How to Play pages recommend it when you are stuck.
- Once the long word is in, keep going. Remaining words still add points, and finding all of them gives the bonus.
- In timed play, keep your hands on the keyboard. Every shortcut you need, including clear and twist, has its own key.
Questions about Text Twist
Is Text Twist unblocked at school?
Text Twist runs in an ordinary browser tab from crossyroad.me, with nothing to download or install, so it plays on most school Chromebooks and work computers. If a network filter blocks the site, only that network's administrator can change it.
How do I get to the next round in Text Twist?
Enter at least one word that uses every letter on the rack. Shorter words add points, but only a full-length word moves you on.
What keyboard shortcuts does Text Twist have?
Type letters to pick balls, Space to twist, Enter to submit or repeat the last word, Backspace to remove a letter, and Tab to clear the row.
Is there a mode without a timer?
Yes. The main menu offers both TIMED and UNTIMED buttons, and untimed play removes the clock.
How long are the words in this version?
Words must be at least three letters. On the web the rack comes from a six-letter word list; seven-letter racks are a deluxe-edition option.
