What this Virtual Piano is
The Virtual Piano on this page is the PianoPlays web keyboard, loaded from pianoplays.com and built on the Construct 2 engine. It is a musical instrument rather than a game with goals: there is no score, no timer and no level select. The screen shows a long piano keyboard, and every key you hit sounds its note, so you can pick out a melody by ear, work through scales or just play around. PianoPlays also runs a Russian-language copy of the same instrument at ru.pianoplays.com.
Range and sound
The note table inside the build spans the whole range of a concert grand, from the lowest A (A0) up to the top C (C8), and all of those keys are drawn on screen at once. Notes play back from audio sample files that the build stores separately for each octave.
How to play
With a mouse, click any key on the drawn keyboard. The build includes touch input, so on a phone or tablet you can tap the keys with your fingers. On a computer keyboard, four rows of keys are mapped like a small two-octave instrument, with the lower octave on the bottom rows and the upper octave on the top rows:
| Keyboard row | Keys | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom letter row (white keys) | Z X C V B N M | C D E F G A B |
| Middle letter row (black keys) | S D G H J | C# D# F# G# A# |
| Top letter row (white keys) | Q W E R T Y U I O P | C D E F G A B, then C D E |
| Number row (black keys) | 2 3 5 6 7 9 0 | C# D# F# G# A#, then C# D# |
Extra keys
- Left and Right arrow keys move the mapped octaves down or up, so the same letters reach lower or higher parts of the keyboard.
- F1 changes the zoom of the on-screen keyboard.
- F2 switches the key map between QWERTY, QWERTZ and AZERTY arrangements, so German and French keyboards get the same note pattern under the fingers.
Tips for practice
- The top letter row from Q to I is a complete C major scale on white keys only; the number keys above it add the sharps and flats.
- The bottom row sits exactly one octave below the top row. Play a bass note on Z to M with the left hand while the right hand carries the tune on Q to P.
- If a tune climbs past P, use the Right arrow to move everything up an octave instead of stretching for keys that are not mapped.
- If the notes seem out of order, for example Y and Z feel swapped, press F2 until the map matches the keyboard in front of you.
Questions about Virtual Piano
